Introduction The Canlan network communications device provides seamless network connectivity for Cansec access control products. The CanLan supports up to ® 16 CP40 or 30 Smartlock control panels. On Maestro systems, network traffic only occurs when events or commands need to be relayed between the host and the control panels.

AC Adaptor The supplied AC power adapter can be plugged into the AC adaptor connector on the back of the Canlan. NOTE: a power outage will result in a 20-30 loss of connectivity to the device. 12 VDC Battery Backup (recommended) The Canlan can be wired via the RS485 header connector to a Cansec access control panel's 12 VDC output.
The RS485 header connector has the following pin-outs: 1. RS485A 2. RS485B 3. GND* 4. Reserved 5. Reserved 6. +12V DC* *use when wiring Canlan to battery backup CanLan Page 7 of 31 Installation Manual August 2014 • Rev. 1.2...

20-second configuration period. If the 20-second configuration period expires before you make a connection, simply power the CanLan off and then power it back on again. This will reset the CanLan and put it back into configuration mode for 20 seconds, and you can attempt another connection.

5. While LED B is illuminated, make a connection by choosing Connect from the CanLan Configuration Software main menu. 6. If LED B is on, choose your connection method: If you are using a serial connection, choose Connect via Serial Port and choose the appropriate COM Port from the drop-down menu.

8. If LED B is off, first power the CanLan off and on again, and then make your selection (as above). 9. Press OK. 10. Once a connection is established, the configuration software will retrieve the current data from the CanLan.
ADDRESS CONFIGURATION The Address Configuration section defines the static IP address that will be assigned to the Canlan as well as its subnet mask and gateway address in the event the host PC is on a different subnet than the Canlan.
OPERATIONAL MODE Operational Mode The Canlan supports several modes of operation, some intelligent, designed to ease host workload and network traffic and others acting as simple Ethernet to RS485 bridges. The modes are selectable on a product basis for simplicity.
REMOTE DIAGNOSTICS The Canlan provides a rich set of diagnostic features to assist in both the installation and ongoing maintenance of field hardware. Additionally diagnostic software is available to assist in connectivity issues between a host and a Canlan (See the Canlan Troubleshooting Guide for more details).
SAVING THE SETTINGS Choose SAVE from the commands at the bottom of the menu screen. NOTE: If you used a network connection to configure the CanLan, change your PC's IP address information back to the original settings. CanLan...

Connecting the Canlan to a Control Panel The Canlan may be connected to up to 16 CP40 access control panels or up to 30 SmartLock access control panels. Refer to the SmartLock Pro Installation Manual or the CP40 Installation Manual for details on connecting the access control panel to the Canlan.

NOTE: The EIA RS-485 standard does not permit T-Tap or Star connections. NOTE: It is highly recommended that the Canlan be powered by 12 VDC output from a Cansec access control panel with battery backup. This will prevent connectivity loss during a power outage.
Configuring Host Software Once the Canlan has been configured and connected to a control panel, test the configuration by attempting a connection to the Canlan from the appropriate host software. The following sections give a brief overview of how to define a new Canlan using either: ...

Once selected, the Network Trunk Addresses dialog is displayed. From this dialog, network trunks may be added, edited or deleted. Each network trunk refers to a Canlan and the Canlan’s IP address and TCP port must be entered here. Once a new trunk has been defined, Maestro (or the Maestro server if a network version) must be restarted before the changes will take place.

Communication Problems If there is a communication problem between the Canlan and the access control panel, it will be reflected in the Timeouts column for each respective control panel. The Timeouts column counts the failure of the control panel to respond to data polls by the Canlan.
Each reader or SmartLock control panel defined within the SmartLock Pro software has a connection tab where the means of communication is defined. After connecting a SmartLock control panel to the Canlan, run the Pro software and choose the Readers view.

Verify the Canlan connection by selecting VIEW > STATISTICS from the menu bar. The communication statistics window will appear, displaying statistics about connected control panels as well as information regarding the current Canlan connection state. Network Column The Network column indicates whether the control panel is connected via a Canlan or not.
Page 28
Offline Column The Offline column displays the actual control panel status and maybe either Yes or No. Yes means that the Canlan is good, but the control panel is not responding. This may indicate control panel address problems, wiring problems between the Canlan and SmartLock control panel or incorrect interface or operational mode selection within the Canlan configuration software.
If the Canlan is currently installed and operational, the MAC address can be determined using the arp program available from the command line. Open a command line window and enter the commands as shown below. In this example, the Canlan at IP address 10.0.0.253 has a MAC address of: 00-90-C2-C3-EB-B8 CanLan...

If LED B is flashing, first make sure all information entered in the configuration software (including IP address) is correct and then press SAVE. Power off the Canlan, wait a few seconds, and power it back on again. LED B should stop flashing while in the 20-second configuration mode. Recheck the information entered in the configuration software.
