Important safety precautions Read these guidelines before using your wireless phone. Failure to comply with them may be dangerous or illegal. Your phone Backlight The backlight illuminates the display and the keypad. When you press any key or open the phone, the backlight comes on. It goes off when no keys are pressed within a given period of time, depending on the setting in the Backlight menu (Menu 9.3.5).
Getting started Installing the SIM card When you subscribe to a cellular network, you are provided with a plug-in SIM card loaded with your subscription details, such as your PIN, any optional services available, and so on. Important! The plug-in SIM card and its contacts can be easily damaged by scratches or bending, so be careful when handling, inserting, or removing the card.

Getting started 3. Slide the SIM card into the SIM card socket, as shown, so that the card locks into position. Make sure the gold coloured contacts on the card face into the phone. Note: When you need to remove the SIM card, slide it upwards, as shown, and take it out of the socket.
A travel adapter comes with your phone for charging the battery. Use only approved batteries and chargers. Ask your local Samsung dealer for further details. The travel adapter allows you to use the phone while the battery is charging, but this causes the phone to charge more slowly.
Getting started 2. Plug the charger into a standard AC wall outlet. 3. When charging is finished, unplug the charger from the power outlet and disconnect it from the phone by pressing the buttons on both sides of the connector and pulling out the connector.

Call functions Making a call When the idle screen displays, enter the area code and phone number, then press the key. Note: When you activate the Auto redial option in the Extra settings menu (Menu 9.2.5), the phone will automatically redial up to 10 times if the person does not answer the call or is already on the phone.

Call functions Adjusting the volume During a call, if you want to adjust the earpiece volume, use the Volume keys on the left side of the phone. Press the key to increase the volume level and the key to decrease the level. In Idle mode, you can also adjust the keypad tone volume using these keys.
Call functions Notes: • You can set how the phone reacts when you open or close the phone in the Slide settings menu (Menu 9.2.3). For further details, see page 168. While you are using a headset, the call is not ended by closing the phone even though the Down option of the menu is set to Stop operation.

Entering text Note: To enter or exit an input mode specific to your country, press and hold the key. Using T9 mode T9 is a predictive text input mode that allows you to key in any character using single keystrokes. This text input mode is based on a built-in dictionary.

Options during a call Your phone provides a number of control functions that you can use during a call. Putting a call on hold You can place the current call on hold whenever you want. You can make another call while you have a call in progress if your network supports this service.
Options during a call Using the speaker You can speak and listen to the phone from a short distance without having to hold the phone to your ear, for example, having it on a table nearby. To use this feature, press the key during a call.
Options during a call Using the Bluetooth headset Using the Bluetooth headset, you can converse with the person on the phone without having to hold the phone to your ear during a call. To use this feature, you first need to register your headset and connect it to the phone.

Example: You wish to say something to a person in the room, but do not want the person on the phone to hear you.
Options during a call Using Phonebook You can use the Phonebook menu during a call, so that you can search for or store entries. For further details about the Phonebook feature, see page 55. Sending a sequence of DTMF tones You can send DTMF tones as a group after entering the entire number you need to send or retrieving a number from the Phonebook list.
Options during a call Using SIM services The SIM service menu is available if you use a SIM card that provides additional services, such as news, weather, sports, entertainment, and location services. Available services may vary, depending on your service provider’s service plans.

Using the menus The phone offers a range of functions that allow you to tailor it to your needs. These functions are arranged in menus and sub-menus. The menus and sub-menus can be accessed by scrolling or by using shortcuts. Accessing a menu function by scrolling 1.
Using the menus Using shortcuts Menu items, such as menus, sub-menus, and options, can be accessed quickly by using their shortcut numbers. For the main menus, you can access any one of them by pressing the number keys (1 to 9) corresponding to their location on the screen.

Call records In this menu, you can view the: • calls you have dialled, received, or missed. • length of your calls. • cost of your calls, depending on your SIM card. Note: You can access the call records of all 3 types of calls by pressing the key in Idle mode.
Call records Send message: allows you to send an SMS or MMS message to the number. For further details about sending a message, see page 90 or page 98 respectively. Delete: deletes the number. Call records Delete all (Menu 1.5) This menu allows you to delete all of the records in each call record separately. You can also delete all of your call records at one time. Press the select a call record Up or Down key. To delete to clear all of your call records, select All calls.
Call records Call costs (Menu 1.7) This network feature lets you view the cost of calls. This menu may not be available, depending on your SIM card. The following options are available: Last call cost: shows the cost of the last call you made. Total cost: shows the total cost of all calls you have made since the cost counter was last reset.
Phonebook You can store phone numbers and their corresponding names in both your SIM card and your phone’s memories. They are physically separate but are used as a single entity, called Phonebook. Note: Depending on your particular SIM card, the maximum number of phone numbers the SIM card can store may differ.

Phonebook On the Contacts list screen, press the Options soft key to access the following options: View: shows information about the selected name. Delete: allows you to delete the selected name. Using Phonebook options While viewing any name in Phonebook, press the Options soft key to access the following options for the name.
Phonebook Delete: allows you to delete the selected name from Phonebook. You are asked to confirm that you wish to delete the name by pressing the Yes soft key. Add new contact (Menu 2.2) This menu allows you to add a new entry into Phonebook.

Phonebook Own number (Menu 2.6) This function is a memory aid, which you can use to check your own phone numbers if you need to do so. You can: • assign a name to each of your own phone numbers registered on your SIM card.

Phonebook Copy all to phone (Menu 2.7.2) You can copy all of the names stored on the SIM card to the phone’s memory. When a confirmation message appears, press the Yes soft key. Delete all (Menu 2.7.3) You can delete all of the names from your phone’s memory, your SIM card, or both.
Phonebook Service number (Menu 2.8) You can view the list of Service Dialling Numbers (SDN) assigned by your service provider. These numbers include emergency numbers, directory enquiries, and voice mail numbers. 1. Scroll through the numbers by pressing the Up or Down key.

Browser Your phone is equipped with a WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) browser to allow you to access and navigate the Wireless Web using your phone. Home (Menu 4.1) Selecting this menu connects the phone to the network and loads the homepage of the Wireless Web service provider.
Browser Entering text in the WAP browser When you are prompted to enter text, the currently active text input mode is indicated on the screen. Selecting and using browser menu options Various menu options are available when you are using the WAP browser to navigate the Wireless Web.
Browser Using the WAP page options When you are using the WAP browser, you can access the following options by pressing the key. Go to URL: switches to the Go to URL menu. For details, see page 86. Bookmark: switches to the Bookmarks menu. For details, see page 85.

Messages Email (Menu 5.3) You can send or receive e-mail messages directly using your phone. Using the Email feature, you can receive or send sounds and pictures, as well as Phonebook entries or calendar memos. Access codes There are several access codes that are used by your phone and its SIM card. These codes help you protect the phone against unauthorised use. When requested for any of the codes explained below, enter the appropriate code (displayed as asterisks) and press the OK soft key.
Access codes The Personal Identification Number or PIN (4 to 8 digits) protects your SIM card against unauthorised use. It is usually supplied with the SIM card. If you enter an incorrect PIN three times in succession, the code is disabled and cannot be used until you re- enable it by entering the PUK (see below).
Access codes PIN2 The PIN2 (4 to 8 digits), supplied with some SIM cards, is required to access specific functions, such as setting the maximum cost of a call. These functions are available if supported by your SIM card. If you enter an incorrect PIN2 three times in succession, the code is disabled and you cannot access the functions until you re-enable it by entering the PUK2.
